State police commands of Katsina and Jigawa have in joint operation smoked out Abdullahi Banmi, the gang leader of a bandit/kidnap group operating in the axis.

Banmi, 50, was involved in kidnapping activities across the axis, hibernating in bushes in local communities.

He and his gang were responsible for the recent kidnap of a 65-year old woman from Rijiyar Tsamiya village, Sandamu Local Government Area of Katsina, seeking a ransom of N500 million on her head.

Hajiya Hassana Zubairu, the woman, was abducted June 29 in her residence by the kidnappers, who moved her to their hideout in Gallu hamlet in Yankwashi Local Government Area in Jigawa, where police, acting 'on credible intelligence...busted and raided the kidnappers hideout,' according to SP Gambo Isa, Katsina's police spokesman.

During the raid, he said, the police, led by the officer in charge of anti-kidnapping, 'engaged the bandits into (sic) a gun duel, killed the gang leader of the syndicate one Abdullahi Banmi, ‘M’, aged 50yrs [and] arrested two suspected members of the syndicate – one (1) Nana Ado, ‘F’, aged 35yrs and (2) Ibrahim Idi, ‘M’, aged 22yrs.'

He added that the team rescued '... Hajiya Hassana Zubairu, ‘F’, aged 65yrs of Rijiyar Tsamiya village, Sandamu LGA of Katsina state.'

He explained further that Banmi was identified, isolated and shot, even though he attempted to flee with the kidnap victim on a motorcycle.

'In the course of profiling the scene, two (2) suspected bandits were arrested and one (1) of their motorcycle was recovered,' SP Gambo's statement said.

'The Command urges members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by giving them credible information on bandits and their collaborators, especially those supplying them with arms and ammunition, informants and other essential commodities.

'The Command assures members of the public that the command remain resolute and committed in the ongoing fight against recalcitrant bandits until they are arrested and dealt with according to the extant laws of the land.'
