Borno State Government has said it will raise teachers’ salaries to the mandatory minimum wage adopted by the federal government.

The state will be paying teachers not less than N30,000 salary monthly, a move it said to raise the quality of education in the state.

Reports indicate that teachers are poorly paid in the state, to the extent that some of them certified in service for ten to 15 years receive N13, 000 monthly.

Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno, while inaugurating the reconstituted board of the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, and the audit commission.

He said ‘efforts would be made to improve quality education by raising teachers’ motivation.

‘We will make sure teachers at least collect the minimum wage of N30,000.’

The governor said committees will go round schools in all parts of the state and conduct competency tests for teachers to ascertain those that have the full knowledge of teaching.

They will also look at the curriculum, as well as engage in further training of those who need upscaling, to upgrade their professional knowledge.

Teachers found to be competent will have their salaries increased, the governor also said, while those who could not meet the required standards after in-service training will be converted to non-academic staff.

Profession Bulama Kagu, chairman SUBEB said the board will hit the ground running in preparations.
