CBN says imposters out to defraud public over e-Naira, gives contacts

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, warned the public on the illegal activities of some individuals following the launch of the e-Naira on Monday.

The CBN disclosed this on Wednesday, when it also said it is not liable for losses of data, money by the public.

It said impostors are out to defraud the public, using a fraudulent Twitter account, @enaira_cbdc.

The bank said it suspended its operations on Twitter since the platform was banned by the federal government, stressing that the account is not related to it.

‘The impostor handle and fraudulent persons have been posting messages related to the eNaira with the intent of wooing unsuspecting Nigeria CBN, among other falsities, is disbursing the sum of 50 billion eNaira currency.

‘These impostors are bent on defrauding innocent and unsuspecting members of the public through the links attached to their messages for application to obtain eNaira wallets and become beneficiaries of the said 50 billion eNaira currency,' Osita Nwanisobi, director, corporate communications of the bank, said in a statement.

He also added that ‘in effect, the bank is not disbursing eNaira currency to citizens.’

He urged Nigerians to seek clarification on the eNaira website: www.enaira.gov.ng or call the eNaira contact centre on 080069362472.

Even more, it said customers can visit any CBN branch close to them.
