Golden Dawn troops send 3 terrorists to death in Anambra

Troops of Sector 05 under newly launched operation, Exercise Golden Dawn, have eliminated three unknown gunmen who reportedly attacked a police checkpoint in Anambra State.

Brigadier General Onyeama Nwachukwu, army spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday that the terrorists attacked the police checkpoint along Okija - Onitsha Expressway on 7 October 2021, in two vehicles.

They were however resisted by the firepower of the troops, forcing them to flee, he said.

'The gallant troops engaged and overwhelmed the gunmen with superior firepower, forcing them to flee the scene. Troops however gave them a hot pursuit, and engaged the gunmen in a gun duel.

'The 3 gunmen, who drove in 2 vehicles ( a Hilux and Hummer bus), eventually succumbed to troops' effective firepower, while others fled with gunshot wounds.

'Troops also recovered one vehicle and 2 motorcycles, while conducting further exploitation of the general area for the fleeing terrorists,' he said.

According to him, one policeman paid the supreme price in the course of his national duty to protect lives and property.

The statement also carried Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya, the chief of army staff's commendation to the troops for the feat, urging them to sustain the momentum against all criminal elements operating in the region.

The COAS also sympathised with the family of the police and prays for the repose of his soul.
