President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his administration has taken some painful but necessary decisions within the last six years.

He said that they are also aware these decisions would come with short-term pains but would pave ways for a secured future.

‘In the past six years, our government took very painful but necessary decisions to invest for a long-term prosperous future, knowing very well that this will come with short term pains,’ he said.

The president made this statement on Tuesday while highlighting some of the challenges facing Nigeria’s economy and how they aim to address it, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at the opening of a three-day ‘Future Investment Initiative Summit.’

At the event, President Buhari called on world leaders and investors to channel more energy and resources to advancing human driven policies and practices that will guarantee global peace and stability, which he believe would help in addressing the rising tension and violent crisis across the globe.

He said both government and private sector stakeholders most start engaging in human investment, as the only way to prevent further escalation of global social unrest, noting that the unrest was caused by deteriorating social inequalities and unfair distribution of wealth and resources.

He said more initiatives should be invested in health, education, capacity building, youth empowerment, gender equality, poverty eradication, climate change, and food security, among other things, saying it is as a key part of his administration already.

‘This would go a long way in reenergizing the global economy in a past Covid19 era,’ Buhari said.

‘Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation. Our economic reforms, which focus on ‘humane’ investments, are ideal for investors looking to have profitable returns while positively impacting the citizenry.

‘Investing in humanity is the right thing to do. I strongly believe the historical under-investments in ‘humane projects’ is the genesis of most of the insecurity and socio-economic challenges the world is experiencing today,’ President Buhari explained.
