The Borno State Government will be distributing 100 vehicles (Toyota Corolla LE make) and 41 seater buses today as a way to ease difficulties faced by residents of the state.

The distribution also includes 500 tricycles, which the government had previously mooted banning on highways, as well as subsequently its private purchase by commercial operators.

The ban on its purchase, lasting over a year now, has caused scarcity of transport facilities in the state—even though they are still being smuggled in through behind-the-door machinations.

As a result, streets litter with loitering passengers scrambling for tricycles, especially at work closing hours or other prime times.

Given this, the state government had to last September go back on its word—not to lift the ban—but to promise an intervention.

According to the government, the decision was necessary to register and capture the bio-data of existing commercial tricycles and its operators in the state.

The government deemed it necessary, it said, in order to address crimes perpetrated by the operators and in their tricycles.

At various times, many passengers have reported being robbed or extorted onboard the commercial tricycles.

Several other crimes are entered in their name.

Authorities are constrained to track them down given to unavailability of data about them.

The distribution will be held at the Ramat Square in Maiduguri later today at 2:00 pm and is expected to be overseen by Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of the state.

Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means.
