North East Development Commission has approved the request of Borno State Government to build a complex that will house faculty of engineering in the newly established state university.

The approval came after a long list of requests by the state government on how the commission will assist the university.

According to Mohammed Alkali, the managing director of the commission, construction of the complex will soon commence.

'Another very important discourse between the commission and the state government was how we can assist the newly established Borno State University.

'But for some obvious reasons, we have chosen to construct the faculty complex for the university which the commission's board has approved and very soon work will also commence,’ Mr. Alkali said.

Mr. Alkali disclosed this on Thursday while handing over two information and communication technology centers it built for Federal Polytechnic Monguno and Ramat Polytechnic.

However, they are, because of insecurity, sited at Center for Mass and Literacy in Maiduguri, Borno state.

Mr. Alkali explained that with the accomplishment of the two centers, the state is projected to graduate not less than 2, 000 students in ICT annually.

He noted that 'this will go a long way in improving access to IT,' thereby creating jobs among youth.

In a similar development, the commission also supported the Borno Geographic Information System with some modern equipment that will help their job.

The equipment includes HP Pavilion all in one, HP Scan-jet Enterprises Flow, Fjitsu Fi-7700 Document Scanner, Konica Minolta Bizhub Press c800 and Fireproof File Cabinet, among others.

According to Mr. Alkali, the support for the agency was based on the unique role it is playing in managing land issues in the state.

The equipment was handed over to Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno who was represented by Prof. Isa Hussaini Marte, his chief of staff at the Center for Mass and Literacy.

The event was also graced by Sadiya Umar Farouq, minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management, also represented by Dr. Nasir Sani Gwarzo, permanent secretary to the ministry.

The minister in her remark, praised the commission for its intervention in the state, and the region at large.

She said the intervention is a strategic method of addressing both current and future problems.

She said this while calling the attention of the institutions and agencies supported to make good use of the resources.

She similarly encouraged the trainees to take advantage of the chance to develop their own e-businesses.

Appeal for support

Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means.
