Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has extended its six-month-old ongoing strike.

For how long, this reporter could not immediately establish but he gathered that the decision was taken after its national executive council meeting held at the union’s headquarters at the University of Abuja on Monday morning.

ASUU had started its industrial action on Monday, February 14, 2022. YERWA EXPRESS NEWS learned that it is extending the strike because the government is yet to meet some of its demands regarding the welfare of its members and the need for infrastructural upgrade of the public universities.

The extension of the strike was also confirmed by Ben Goong, spokesperson of the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Education.

In an interview with The Punch, he said the government has taken all possible steps to end the strike but to no avail.

'As regards the next steps, the government has already inaugurated a committee to harmonise the IPPIS, UTAS, and UP3.

'This will ensure that the government will pay with only one payment platform that will harmonise all the technical peculiarities.

'If you bring some demands and almost 80% have been attended to, there is no need to drag the strike anymore.

'It is unreasonable for the strike to be lingering seeing as the government has worked towards fulfilling most of the demands,’ Goong told the paper.

According to him, the union did not specify how long the strike had been extended.
