Students in Borno State have called on Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, their state governor and other state governors to intervene in the ongoing crisis between the federal government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

Cmrd. Abubakar Sadiq Wajiro, president, National Union of Borno State Students Association, NUBOSS, made the call in an interview with YERWA EXPRESS NEWS on Sunday.

Wajibo was inaugurated as the union's new president at El-Kanemi Hall, University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID.

ASUU has been on strike for about six months now and after several engagements and negotiations with the federal government, they are yet to call it off.

The NUBOSS president said that despite several interventions by different bodies in the country, there is still nothing tangible on the resolution between the two parties and believes that the governors' intervention will carry more weight in resolving the lingering crisis.

He also said that he recieved his inauguration with mixed feelings knowing that many students across the nation are at home, idling.

He noted that idle students are likely to engage in unwanted practices that will affect the next generation because 'an idle mind, is the devil's workshop.'

'The ASUU strike is pathetic to be candid, therefore we are urging and soliciting for our state governor and his fellow colleagues in other states to intervene in ending the ASUU strike to help students secure their future,' he said.

On support from the state government for NUBOSS, Wajiro said 'we are expecting absolute support from our governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, he has been doing it and we are optimistic that he will keep doing it.'

In his inaugural speech earlier, Cmrd. Wajiro said Governor Zulum has played a key role in helping them revive the association which has been dormant for several years.

During the inauguration, Alh. Bulama Mali Gubio, the father of the occasion, advised the students to get involved in political activities at every level.

He said school associations are a training ground for grooming future leaders and the relationships built at that stage is what will manifest in future endeavours.

Mr. Gubio also called on the newly inaugurated leaders of NUBOSS and other students to be ambassadors of integrity, noting that their legacies will shape the future.

Also at the event, Dr. Zainab Chullube, a lecturer at UNIMAID encourage women to participate in unionism and other political activities.

While encouraging women to get involved in politics, she said young people most engage in political processes and gain experiences that will prepare them for future responsibilities.

She explained that people must begin to take politics as a career to harness good leaders, adding that 'it is not enough to say so and so is a good leader and has so and so qualities, we need to practicalize it and show discipline.'

Hon. Abubakar Tijjani, commissiner, ministry of transport and other state officials, politicians and other stakeholders are present at the event.
