President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the cold-blooded murder of Sheikh Goni Asiami, the Yobe-based Islamic scholar.

The cleric was killed on Friday allegedly by a soldier who he had lifted along Gashua – Damaturu road.

Police in the state on Tuesday reported to have arrested a suspect in connection to the crime. And according to them, at the point of interrogation the suspect already confessed to have committed the crime.

The police identified the suspect as John Gabriel, a lance corporal attached to 241 Reece Battalion in Nguru Local Government of the state.

He was arrested following a hint from someone who claimed to have seen the culprits trying to get rid of the deceased’s dead body.

Garba Shehu, one of the spokespeople of the president who conveyed the president’s reaction in a statement on Wednesday, said his principal condemned the act.

The president said: ‘as the Commander-in-Chief, I am personally outraged by this criminal and wicked act by a law enforcement official trained to protect life.’

He said this while calling on concerned authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice without any delay.

‘This incident is capable of making our fellow citizens fearful of assisting soldiers, thereby destroying the bond of trust between our military and the civilians.

'I call on the military authorities to punish the perpetrators of this heinous crime without delay, and flush out other elements with such criminal tendencies,' he added.

The president’s reaction followed the reactions of several citizens, religious councils and others, urging the government and authorities concerned to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs called for immediate action from authorities starting with the prosecution of the perpetrator.

The council made the call in a statement by Prof. Salisu Ibrahim, the deputy director of the council.

The Jama'atul Izalatul Bidi'a Wa Iqamatul Sunnah JIBWIS equally made a similar demand to the government.
