At least 15 people have been killed by a flood in River Ngadabul in Maiduguri, capital of Borno, the Nigerian National Emergency Management Agency has said.

The river which normally increases in water level with rise in amount of rainfall, as well as surface water emptying into it, traverses the city of Maiduguri.

Young people practice swimming especially when the level is high, but without any regulation. But the way the 15 were drowned is not specifically also clear.

Muhammad Usman, north east coordinator of the agency told News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday that so far about 15 people have been ‘swallowed’ by the river.

But it is not clear yet entirely clear to YERWA EXPRESS NEWS if their dead bodies have been recovered; and if so, whether they have been identified.

He said the high volume of water in the river also affected many communities along the river banks.

He advised guardians and parents to caution their wards and children against swimming in the river especially when it is high.

'NEMA as a disaster management agency has been engaged in serious sensitization of the public on dangers of flooding and precautionary measures.

'We have been having meetings with various stakeholders on sensitization and providing relief materials to affected communities,' Mr. Usman said.

Meanwhile, the Borno Command of Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps has deployed its personnel along the river banks to chase away children trooping to the river to take a swim.

Reports have shown that Borno is one of the 32 states where flood was predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet.

Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means.
