Annual Arabic conference opens in Borno as Gov. Zulum vows to build Arabic colleges

Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, Governor of Borno has disclosed his plan to construct 27 Arabic colleges across all the local governments of the state.

The governor revealed this while receiving an award at the 39 International World Arabic Day and Annual National Conference of the Nigerian Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies, NATAIS, which held at the Musa Usman Secretariat in Maiduguri.

Scholars from various parts of the country and beyond have also attended the annual event.

Speaking, Prof. Ibrahim Mohammed, the executive director of the Nigerian Arabic Village, Ngamboru Ngala Local Government of the state commended the governor for his plans to further boost Arabic knowledge in the state.

He said this while recounting how Arabic and Islamic studies remained a major part of the over 1, 000 years of the history of Borno, citing references from books and scholars.

Also speaking at the event, Prof. Abubakar Mustapha, the former vice chancellor of University of Maiduguri called on the NATAIS to enlighten the public on the true teachings of Islam regarding politics.

In a paper presentation themed: Politics and Citizens' Welfare in Nigeria: The Role of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Prof. Mustapha called on politicians to detest from riot and protest after results are announced in the upcoming elections, citiny verses from the holy Quran which spoke strongly against it.

He advised that where there are genuine cases of malpractice or rigging, candidates/politicians should resort to the court instead of instigating violence, which contradicts the true teachings of Islam.
