President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive review of the recently announced governing boards of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, following public outcry over the lopsidedness of the appointments.
The review comes after the Federal Ministry of Education released a list of nominees for chairmen, pro-chancellors, and members of the boards and councils of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, with some states receiving only one nomination while others received multiple appointments.
In a statement, one of Tinubu's spokespeople, Bayo Onanuga, said President Tinubu has acknowledged the feedback from across the country and is committed to ensuring strict compliance with the principle of federal character as entrenched in the constitution.
The review will also take into consideration national spread and ensure every part of the country is adequately represented.
The inauguration and retreat for the nominees, initially scheduled for May 31, will be put on hold pending the outcome of the review.
This move is seen as a response to public concerns over the lack of representation and balance in the initial appointments, and is expected to address the issue and ensure a more inclusive and representative leadership in the country's tertiary institutions.
