DPO Pius Sunday, Marte Local Government Area's divisional police officer, was killed on Monday while trying to avert a kidnap attempt by ISWAP terrorists.
The deceased DPO sustained gunshot wounds that eventually caused his death.
YERWA EXPRESS NEWS reported that the incident occurred when he mobilized a response to a reported abduction attempt on Adam Abatcha, a health worker operating in the LGA.
ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, police spokesman in Borno, said Abatcha, who is a senior community health extension worker, escaped the attempt and reported the incident to the police station.
DPO Sunday was ambushed and killed in his attempt to apprehend the kidnappers.
Sani Murtala, one of his officers, also sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh in the ambush.
He is currently receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).
The deceased DPO's body has also been transferred to the UMTH mortuary.
Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, Borno's Commissioner of Police, on behalf of the officers and men of the command, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the bereaved.
This incident comes amidst a rise in attacks by the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), a Boko Haram splinter group, in the region.
Marte is located approximately 93 kilometers from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. It used to be a major stronghold of the terrorists, until Nigerian troops recovered it.
