A farm belonging to orphans in Maiduguri has been destroyed by the flooding of Alau Dam.
The dam helps the recycling of water for use in the metropolitan parts of the state, including irrigation along its banks.
The farm, capable of producing 200 bags of rice, is being cultivated by Future Prowess Islamic Foundation, an orphanage school located in Fori, a Maiduguri township. It is cultivated in collaboration with the guardians of the orphans as the proceeds go into their feeding.
Barrister Zanna Mustapha, a retired legal practitioner and founder of the foundation, who shared the sad news in an exclusive interview with our reporter said the flood destroyed all hopes for the farm.
'The farm has the capacity to produce two hundred bags of rice. We cannot get even one spoon now,' Barrister Zannah said, stressing that other produce destroyed in the farms included groundnuts, sesame, beans, sweet potatoes, onions and others.
According to him, the flood also affected the orphanage school, including garden and a fish pond, causing further damage to the school's infrastructure.
He said this while calling on the government and donor agencies to come to the rescue of the orphans.
Barrister Zannah is known for his philanthropic activities. He is a recipient of the 2021 CNN Heroes Award for his peacebuilding efforts and philanthropic work, especially for orphans and other victims of the Boko Haram armed conflict in the Northeast region.
In another news, the Government of Borno State has already announced that efforts are underway to contain the situation, with Tijani Bukar, the secretary to the state government assuring that there is no cause for panic.
Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means. You can also donate working tools, which are even more primary to our work. We thank you sincerely as you help our cause.
