The Borno State Government has inaugurated a 13-member committee to review and demarcate developments along riverbanks, buffer zones, and waterways in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
Led by Chairman Tlp Liman Gana Mustapha, the committee aims to review and update buffer zones, identify developments within zones, produce detailed plans for executive approval, and recommend measures to protect and plan along rivers.
Adam Bukar Bababe, executive secretary, Borno Geographic Information Services (BOGIS), warned against further development in high-risk zones, citing over 1,300 marked illegal structures since 2020.
This move follows a devastating September 10 flood disaster, and Bababe emphasized the need to safeguard communities and prevent future disasters.
The committee has two weeks to submit recommendations for executive approval.
Mustapha assured that the committee members are committed to executing their duties diligently and impartially, prioritizing the state's well-being.
Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means. You can also donate working tools, which are even more primary to our work. We thank you sincerely as you help our cause.
