After more than a decade of insurgency-induced disruption, Kukawa Local Government Area has witnessed a swearing-in of its local council officials, marking a restoration of grassroots governance.
The event, held on Sunday saw the official assumption of office by Hon. Mustapha Mohammed Kukawa, the newly elected council chairman.
He assumed office alongside councillors representing the various wards in the local government.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Karta Maina Maaji Lawan, who is the member representing Kukawa at the Borno State House of Assembly, congratulated the new council leadership and called for unity, integrity and selfless service.
He urged councillors to prioritize the needs of their constituents and work collectively to rebuild confidence in local administration after years of conflict.
As part of activities marking the take-off of the new council, Hon. Karta led a sensitisation tour across the LGA to mobilise residents and party supporters for the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic membership registration (e-registration).
The tour covered Kukawa town, Doro, Bunduram, Baga and Cross Kauwa, where residents were encouraged to actively participate in the e-membership registration exercise.
He described the exercise as a key to strengthening the party’s internal structure and enhancing political inclusion at the grassroots.
Hon. Karta emphasised that the e-registration initiative would modernise party records, promote transparency and give members a stronger voice in party affairs.
In a related development, the lawmaker commissioned the newly completed 19 Brigade office complex at Cross Kauwa and attended the handover ceremony of the Commanding Officer of the brigade.
Brigadier General SS Ahmed formally handed over to the new Commanding Officer, Brigadier General MA Usman.
He also commended Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, for his sustained support to Kukawa Local Government, particularly in the areas of security, infrastructure and post-insurgency recovery.
The council leadership, led by the council leader, Hajjakellu Lawan Yarayi, expressed appreciation to stakeholders and residents for their support, describing the return of elected local governance as a new chapter of hope for Kukawa.
Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means.
