Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched the 2024 tree planting campaign, aiming to plant 10 million seedlings.
The event took place on Tuesday in Kawuri Community, Konduga Local Government Area.
Engr. Emet Kiose, Borno’a Commissioner for Environment, welcomed guests and explained that the campaign aims to control desertification in the state.
He appealed to NGOs, clubs, associations, and the public to obtain seedlings from the ministry for planting.
The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) hailed Gov. Zulum as an environmental champion, citing his administration's achievements in addressing environmental issues.
Saleh Abubakar, NAGGW's Director General, represented by Hajiya Habiba Usman, praised Borno State for being the first to domesticate the GGW Act and establish a state agency.
Gov. Zulum noted that his administration has launched initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, including procuring electric vehicles and gas cylinders for distribution.
He established an agency for the Great Green Wall to address desertification and maintain the ecosystem.
The governor assured of his commitment to protecting Borno's degrading environment, which has resulted in low rainfall, and directed the Secretary to the State Government to develop measures to address flaws in the existing environmental law.
Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means. You can also donate working tools, which are even more primary to our work. We thank you sincerely as you help our cause.
