Muhammad Bello Matawalle, the minister of state for defence, has on Tuesday conducted a high-profile visit to the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto State.
He was joined by General CG Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence; Brigadier General IA Ajose, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, and several other senior military officers.
The visit was primarily focused on reviewing the ongoing operations of the 8 Division, particularly those under Operation Hadarin Daji, which aims to eradicate banditry and terrorism from the region.
According to Henshaw Ogubike, the ministry's director of information and public relations, Matawalle conveyed a strong directive to the troops to intensify their efforts, reflecting the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to restore peace and security in the Northwest.
During his address to the troops, the minister reiterated the federal government’s unwavering commitment to supporting the military's efforts to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.
He praised the dedication and resilience of the troops, acknowledging the challenging nature of their security operations.
'The security of our nation is paramount, and the President has given a clear mandate that the bandits and terrorists threatening our peace must be flushed out. I am here today to reaffirm the Federal Government’s support and to urge you to remain relentless in your efforts. Your bravery and dedication are the backbone of our national security,' stated Matawalle.
He emphasized that the military’s success in Operation Hadarin Daji is crucial for the safety and security of the people in Sokoto and the broader Northwest region.
Matawalle assured the troops of the continuous support from the government and military leadership, highlighting the strategic guidance provided by the Chief of Defence Staff and other service chiefs.
'The Chief of Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs stand with you, providing the necessary resources and strategic guidance. We expect nothing less than total success in this operation. The safety and security of the people of Sokoto and the entire Northwest region depend on your effectiveness,' he added.
As part of the visit, Matawalle reviewed the operational strategies currently in place and explored ways to enhance the effectiveness of ongoing military efforts.
He affirmed that the government would provide all necessary support to ensure the success of Operation Hadarin Daji.
'President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has no doubt in your ability to deliver on this mission. Together, we will restore peace to our land and secure a brighter future for all Nigerians,' Matawalle concluded.
Additionally, the minister toured the 8 Division Medical Facilities and Hospital at Giginya Barracks in Sokoto, where he pledged to support the facility with necessary equipment to boost morale among patients and healthcare providers.
The visit might be a reaction to the recent upsurge and attacks by bandits in the North West region.
