Security operatives escorting the convoy of Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum have opened fire on Boko Haram terrorists on their way from Gamboru Ngala to Maiduguri after a three-day tour.
Though the terrorists' motive was not known, the convoy's security escort went after them and exchanged fire for nearly half an hour between 12:50 pm and 1:30 pm.
The governor went on a tour to some local government areas following attacks by the terrorists. It is not clear if the governor was in the convoy.
A source who was in the entourage confirmed the incident to our reporter in a phone conversation.
The governor was in Wulgo with his entourage to assess the security situation.
'On our way to Maiduguri, after leaving Wulgo, the incident happened,' a source said.
The sudden eruption of gunshot sounds has caused panic across the convoy, with some 'thinking it was an ambush.'
This paper learned that the convoy ran into the terrorists, seemingly on a sinister mission.
Another source said, the terrorists fired a rocket launcher which didn't explode while the governor was giving a speech.
'One of the security operatives sighted a rocket launcher that was fired by the terrorists when the governor was speaking to the community which alerted the entourage to leave the place. On their way out the terrorists engaged the security operatives,' the source said.
The security operatives in the convoy opened fire on them and dispersed them after exchanging fire.
Another source said 'thank God, we are back to Maiduguri now.'
In the crossfire, this paper learned that some of the Civilian Joint Task Force and some hunters--the figures of which are not yet ascertained--sustained some injuries.

Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means.
