The Peace Ambassadors Centre for Humanitarian Aid and Empowerment, in collaboration with the Borno State Government, UNDP, and Better Aid, has awarded YERWA EXPRESS NEWS (YEN) for its honest, insightful, and impactful storytelling.
The award was presented on Monday in Maiduguri, with Abdulkarim Lawan, Borno’s speaker of the state house of assembly, confering the award.
The bodies stated that the recognition highlights the outlet’s commitment to fostering peace, promoting unity and prosperity, in its reporting.
The event was part of the commemoration of The International Day of Peace, with the theme “Act Now for a Peaceful World.”
The program brought together representatives from United Nations agencies, the British Council, the Borno State Government, donor organizations, civil society, ministries, legislators, media, traditional leaders, and young people.
The award celebrates the medium’s role in amplifying the voices and experiences of local communities through responsible journalism.
Ambassador Ahmed Shehu, convener and chairman of the organizing committee, said the recognition underscores the outlet’s contribution to advancing peace and development.
'The International Day of Peace provides a platform for sharing best practices and experiences by individuals and organizations committed to peace, security, and development,' Shehu said.
The ceremony featured both physical and virtual participation, reinforcing the global call for unity and collective action in building a peaceful world.
About Yerwa Express News
Yerwa Express News was founded in 2016 by sons and daughters of the North East region.
Headquartered in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno, it is led by a seasoned journalist and columnist Abdulhamid Al-Gazali, as its editor-in-ehief.
It was established to tell the stories of the people of the region, who have been plagued by the Boko Haram Insurgency.
It aims also to counter misrepresented narratives and promote peace and recovery in the region.
Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means. You can also donate working tools, which are even more primary to our work. We thank you sincerely as you help our cause.
