At least 13 people were abducted on Saturday while working on a communal farm in Huyim, a village under Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
Residents said the victims were participating in a long-standing community tradition in which groups gather to assist one another during farming activities.
The victims, all females, were reportedly harvesting crops when armed men believed to be Boko Haram insurgents stormed the area and abducted them. Twelve of the victims were reportedly between the ages of 15 to 20 with one above 20.
However, the elderly woman managed to escape and returned home safely. She was helping security with intelligence.
The Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Abdullahi Askira, confirmed the abduction to Daily Trust saying the victims were abducted on their fields in Mussa district.
Abdullahi, who represents Askira-Uba constituency, said the 13 abductees who were between the ages of 15 and 20 years went to their farmland in Mussa farming area to harvest their crops when the assailants took them away.
Conflict Reporting is dangerous and risky. Our reporters constantly face life-threatening challenges, sometimes surviving ambushes, kidnap attempts and attacks by the whiskers as they travel and go into communities to get authentic and firsthand information. But we dare it every day, nonetheless, in order to keep you informed of the true situation of the victims, the trends in the conflicts and ultimately help in peace building processes. But these come at huge cost to us. We are therefore appealing to you to help our cause by donating to us through any of the following means. You can also donate working tools, which are even more primary to our work. We thank you sincerely as you help our cause.
