Police faults army’s claim of arrest of a suicide bomber, says investigation still ongoing

Police has said no suicide bomber was arrested in Banki Town of Bama, Borno. This was in response to earlier reports indicating such an arrest in the town.

The police made the clarification in a statement seen by this reporter on Wednesday, issued by ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, police spokesman in the state.

This is coming few hours after the troops of Operation Hadin Kai issued a statement of the arrest of one Abubakar near a mosque in Banki as a suspected suicide bomber.

On the contrary, the police said it 'has observed with concern the circulation of social media videos alleging the recovery of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) components in Banki Local Government Area of Borno State.

'To set the record straight, on 29th December 2025, at about 1810hrs operatives of the Command, while on surveillance around a mosque in Banki LGA, accosted one Abubakar in possession of a bag containing electrical wires, old mobile phone batteries, assorted gadget scrap materials, and pairs of shoes.

'Priliminary investigations indicates the items found has “no active ied fabrication or priming”,' the police said.

It added that the case has been transferred to the state command headquarters for comprehensive investigation, noting that the suspect is currently under custody, while investigations are ongoing to ascertain the circumstances and intent surrounding possession of the items.

'The Command cautions members of the public against spreading unverified information capable of causing fear or panic, and urges reliance on credible and official sources for accurate information. Further updates will be provided as investigations progress.

'The Borno State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and calls on members of the public to remain vigilant,' the advised.
